ABOUT McLAWS LAW

McLaws Law is the legal practice of Peter B. McLaws and, first and foremost, this is what Peter wants you to know:

• I come from a long and strong tradition of legal service. While I have been at it for ‘only’ two decades, my family has practiced law in Calgary for over a century.
• My goal is to provide every client I serve with the straightforward and practical legal advice and representation needed to achieve their goals in the most timely and cost-effective manner possible.
• I know the real world. Before earning my law degree from the University of Calgary in 1989, I operated my own business as a hands-on residential builder and woodworker after serving my apprenticeship with Soren Christianson, then Calgary’s pre-eminent custom builder. I have been self-employed for most of my working life.
• I articled and then cut my legal teeth with the highly regarded litigation firm of Meurin Johns Wilson & Smith before Jeffrey L. Smith Q.C. and I started our own firm, Smith McLaws, in downtown Calgary where we practiced successfully for many years while serving a traditional downtown clientele.
• I started McLaws Law in 2013 with a new and exciting vision – to bring my years of experience right to my clients’ doors while working from my home office – and I’m pleased to say that the results have been more satisfying and fulfilling than I could have hoped for.
• During my many years of practicing law I have served my clients through preparing their Wills, Powers of Attorney and Personal Directives, helping them through the difficult process of probating the estates of lost loved ones, buying and selling their homes and businesses, incorporating their companies, guiding them through employment and termination issues, drafting contracts for them and resolving their disputes with neighbours, merchants, administrative officials, insurers, business partners and more.
